“Twelfth Night” starring Anne Hathaway

Looking back at recent productions, I am struck by the strength — and often the prescience — in the casting. When a movie star had one of the two big female roles, bets were usually hedged with a real stage professional in the other part. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio was a radiant Viola to Pfeiffer’s Olivia. Kyra Sedgwick played Olivia to Hunt’s Viola. And look at this: Oliver Platt was madly lovely as Sir Toby Belch in the Smits/Stiles production, with Christopher Lloyd as a terrific Malvolio, and Kristen Johnston and Zach Braff in smaller comic roles.

Look for Hathaway also to be surrounded by formidable theater actors, including Audra McDonald as Olivia and Raul Esparza as Orsino. In 2006, Hathaway said she was more comfortable onstage than in movies. “I trained to be a theater actress,” she said. “Put me in front of a camera and I’m like ’duh.’ But put me on a stage in front of 2,000 people, I know what I’m doing.” So we’ll see.

WHEN&WHERE
Shakespeare in the Park’s “Twelfth Night” starring Anne Hathaway, at the Delacorte Theater, Central Park near West 81st Street, in previews for a June 25 opening, through July 12. Tickets are free on the day of performance, two per person, after 1 p.m. in

Anne Hathaway Central Park Cutie

Gearing up for her big Shakespeare in the Park performance, Anne Hathaway was spotted rehearsing in New York City’s Central Park yesterday (July 1).

The “Bride Wars” babe looked prim and proper as she sauntered around the stage in a period-authentic ivory dress with a pulled-back hairdo.

In related news, Miss Hathaway was recently invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, an exclusive group of actors, directors, and producers that is allowed only 6000 members at any time.

And it sounds like Anne is in good company, as other new inductees include Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, and Seth Rogen.

Her Enchanted Evenings

Anne Hathaway is both theater nerd and Hollywood starlet, do-gooder and glamour-seeker. And this summer, in Central Park, she is also both boy and girl.

You must excuse me,” says Anne Hathaway, at Cafe Luxembourg on the Upper West Side. The 26-year-old actress is explaining that she’s very, very tired, because she is playing Viola in Twelfth Night, this summer’s Shakespeare in the Park offering, and she has been rehearsing like mad. She’s trying to say the play is complicated, but deceptively so, or maybe it’s deceptively simple? “My mind is shot,” she says, dumping a bit of milk into her coffee. She doesn’t look tired: Her skin is porcelain clear, her eyes calm and bright. “I can speak only in iambic pentameter.”

Anne Hathaway is a theater geek: She enunciates her words very clearly and speaks with an actressy almost-accent, like Rosalind Russell. She has a big, toothy, Julia Roberts–esque laugh. Some words she sings out, mock-opera style: “Great minds!” she trills when we both order the same thing for lunch.

Had Hathaway been born with a less beautiful face, or with less talent, you get the feeling she would’ve stuck to the theater anyhow, as a stagehand or a grip, or a longtime counselor at Stagedoor Manor camp. “I wake up in the morning,” she says, “and the first breath I take is in the devotion of acting.” But she is beautiful—her features out-proportion the rest of her face by a mile—and, as became particularly clear in last year’s Rachel Getting Married, in which she played a recovering drug addict, she’s really very good. “I saw her in The Princess Diaries at a drive-in movie theater in Maine,” says Rachel director Jonathan Demme, “and I just thought, What a great presence. It kind of made me proud to be an American, seeing her share the screen with Julie Andrews. She’s got quote-unquote It.”Right now, Hathaway is navigating the treacherous world of fame, with regard to both her career and her so-called private life. With work, she has to balance groovy, troubling indies with explosive, glossy paydays (Bride Wars) and somehow not become known exclusively for either.

And in spite of her efforts toward personal wholesomeness—she has described herself as a “Labrador puppy of a person”—she became tabloid candy last summer when her boyfriend of four years, Raffaello Follieri, was found to be a creepy con man who claimed to be in business with the Vatican and was promptly sentenced to prison.

“I don’t have the words to describe that yet,” she says, suddenly serious, her big eyes welling up with tears. “Hopefully at some point in my life I will have the words to describe what it was actually like, but at the moment, all I can say is that it was heavy, it was shocking, and I don’t completely understand it.”

The attention around Hathaway only grew when she got nominated for an Oscar for Rachel, and now she can’t really get a cup of coffee without the moment being recorded by someone with a long-angle lens. Some of the paparazzi, she says, have “the morality of a wild animal who eats its young.

“There are enough reality-TV stars out there who clearly want attention and fame,” she adds. “I personally don’t think they know what they’re getting into, but it’s a very human instinct. I never wanted to be famous. I just wanted to act. So it’s very odd. Here I am doing something that’s a real actor thing to do and I’m being treated like a celebrity. I was going to take this year off from being a celebrity!”

Which is not to say she dislikes the fame, the glamour, the glitz. Remembering the Academy Awards ceremony, she exclaims, “It was like, Oh my God! I’m that girl! And I’m 26! I’m that girl! I’m sure for people who’ve been nominated multiple times there are more complicated feelings about what it all means, but I was like, You know what? I’m going to focus on the fairy-tale part of it. I’m just going to live in the stardust and the sparkle.” When Natalie Portman congratulated her on the red carpet, Hathaway’s response was “Who are you, you awesome creature of wonderfulness?”

Shakespeare in the Park is a considerably less sparkly, more arduous affair, and Hathaway likes it a great deal: She likes the long rehearsals, she likes slipping off to the uptown Shake Shack with cast and crew. It’s a bit of being the actress she imagined she’d be when, as a child in New Jersey, she decided to take after her mother, who acts in regional theater and has done so forever. “I hounded [Public Theater director] Oskar Eustis for years,” she says. After Rachel, “I think it became more of a priority for him to get me onstage.” Hathaway stirs her coffee. “I do hope that doesn’t sound obnoxious.”

She’s even enjoying the cross-dressing. “I was feeling like I could do more to get into my character,” she explains. “So I decided, What if I walked around New York trying to pass for a boy? What if I had to make people look twice to figure out what I was? I kind of got dressed up, and there were six photographers outside. I was walking my dog, and they know my dog, so all of the sudden I’m in a terribly unflattering outfit, I look like I’m auditioning for West Side Story, and it’s on the Internet! And it’s just like, I’m doing this for my job!”

She’s just visited the Hetrick-Martin Institute—her older brother is gay, and she has gotten very involved in various gay-rights causes—and finds herself thinking even more about the gender-bending aspect of her role. “I’m really going to lean in to that,” she says, before sighing a big sigh-of-contentment sigh. “It’s the most delicious, exhausting challenge.”

There are a number of films set to begin once the play ends and after some time spent immersed in a “gorgeous blanket of nurturing familiarity” (translation: family vacation). She’ll be in Garry Marshall’s Valentine’s Day, with Julia Roberts and Shirley MacLaine (“We don’t have any scenes together, but hey, I get a poster!”). Talk of other projects swirls around her, but she’s coy about it. “I don’t mean to be, but sometimes things don’t work out in the end, and then people think it’s because you hate someone, and I don’t hate anyone!”

It has, however, been confirmed that she’ll be playing Judy Garland on Broadway, and that seems about right.

“This is so embarrassing, but one of the waitresses just walked by with a glass of white wine and I almost reached out and grabbed it. It would be lovely to have a bit of release, but no. I have to go to rehearsal. I don’t want to be the girl who shows up tipsy. But wouldn’t it be fun? Wouldn’t it be fun someday to be a grande dame who can get away with anything?”

Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman NYC Lovers

Enjoying a break from her stage duties, Anne Hathaway and boyfriend Adam Shulman were spotted making their way around New York City on Friday (July 3).

Looking very much in love, the “Devil Wears Prada” actress and her beau did a bit of shopping and grabbed a lunch in the East Village - sharing a big smooch while seated at an outdoor table.

As for her latest endeavor, Miss Hathaway has been busy performing in the play “Twelfth Night” at Shakespeare in the Park.

With shows running through July 12, Anne has gotten high praise for her work. Among her fans, David Rooney of Variety wrote: “It’s hard to imagine a more satisfying staging of the crowd-pleasing romantic comedy than this one orchestrated by director Daniel Sullivan, a superb design team and an impeccable cast assembled around Anne Hathaway, who makes a thoroughly winning and accomplished professional Shakespeare debut.”

Hathaway Does Broadway

Anne Hathaway became a headliner of course when she dated that dirt bag financier ex of hers who is now in prison, but more notably, with her nomination for Rachel Getting Married and the chick flick which went into theaters and out pretty quickly, Bride Wars, Hathaway’s heat is rising.

Next up for the Oscar nominee, Hathaway is channeling Shakespeare!Forget the big screen for now and her upcoming films in 2010 such as Alice in Wonderland and the Fiance as Hathaway will be in Manhattan for the Central Park production of Twelfth Night.

As in years past, the festival will be held at the outdoor Delacorte Theater from June 9 through July 12 in New York City.

Interestingly enough, Anne Hathaway’s performance will be slightly different than other roles actors have taken in the Big Apple. Remember when Julia Roberts co-starred with Paul Rudd on Broadway? Or how about Katie Holmes stint on the Great White Way?

There are countless of A-listers who perform on Broadway in musicals or dramas. The real testament will be seeing Hathaway in a traditional role such as Shakespeare and handling the challenges of the live performance.

This is a play that has stood the test of time. Now that’s what we call acting.

Anne Hathaway to Pull Double Judy Garland Dut

A star has already been born, but apparently Anne Hathaway’s Oscar-nominated role as a tempestuous recovering addict in Rachel Getting Married was just a warm-up.

The 26-year-old It girl is attached to star in upcoming film and theater productions of Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland.

The dual projects are based on the 2000 Gerald Clarke-penned biography about Judy Garland, the wee (4 feet, 11 inches, per IMDb) actress with the huge voice who went from child star to MGM golden girl to walking tragedy before her death at 47 of an accidental barbiturate overdose in 1969.“We are thrilled to have the brilliantly talented Anne Hathaway portray stage and screen legend Judy Garland. I have worked with Anne on projects in the past and have known her for many years. She will be a true class act in this challenging role,” said Harvey Weinstein, whose Weinstein Co. optioned the rights to Clarke’s book.

No word on whether Hathaway—a classically trained soprano—will lip-sync, as Marion Cotillard did with Edith Piaf’s iconic vocals in her Oscar-winning turn in La Vie en Rose, or if she’ll provide her own take on Garland’s signature sound.

Judy Davis, for one, went with the recordings in her award-reaping turn as Garland in the ABC movie Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows, based on the memoir by Liza’s half-sister, Lorna Luft.

Jackman Plans Carousel Trip with Oscar Partner Hathaway

The Aussie star has developed a script for the beloved Stephen Sondheim musical and he wants Hathaway to play Julie Jordan opposite his Billy Bigelow.

He says, “I’ve been looking to do a musical film for some time and after things like Moulin Rouge!, Chicago and Hairspray, I think there’s a real opportunity there.”

And he’s clear only Hathaway will do as his leading lady: “I’ve been filling up her answering machine with messages about Carousel.”

Hathaway, who joined Jackman for a song and dance at the Oscars, is about to embark on her own musical journey – she will star in a new theatre and film adaptation of The Wizard of Oz star Judy Garland’s life.

Anne Hathaway says no to fake tanning

Anne Hathaway admits, she’ll never use fake tan again because she ended up looking “an orange zebra” the first time she used the product

The “Devil Wears Prada” star is said to be known for her pasty complexion, but the actress once decided to go a bit darker.

However Hathaway ended up regretting her decision when she saw herself in the mirror, the Contactmusic.Com reported.“I had a spray tan done and I wound up looking like an orange zebra. When it came off, because I’m so pale underneath, I looked like a giraffe with leprosy.” “And I smelled like nachos and maple syrup the whole time. It was not a good idea,” the star said.

The 26-year-old actress had earlier said that she does terrible things however nobody gets a hint of it as she has discreet friends.

“I do terrible things. I just have very discreet friends,” the Daily Express quoted her as saying.

The star who was nominated for Best Actress in Rachel Getting Married at the Oscars recently, also performed on stage with Australian actor Hugh Jackman in a musical tribute to Best film nominee Frost Nixon at the academy award ceremony.

Anne Hathaway Gives Herself A Break

So her Oscar chances were crushed by the juggernaut of Kate Winslet and the “Extras” rule that Holocaust movies always win. So what? Anne Hathaway gave herself some time off anyway and was spotted relaxing in Liberia, Costa Rica. Hathaway went on a boat ride and, later on, posed for pictures with some fans who happened to be lucky enough to be vacationing there at the same time.If you like having the place all to yourself, now’s a great time to visit the Caribbean. If you’re part of the tourist-and-trade economy, ehhh, not so much. Among the American businesses smacked by the effects of the Caribbean tourism slump are food distributors who supply to mega-cruises and transport companies normally mailing goodies between Caribbean immigrants and the families they left behind.

At the same time, no one wants it to look like he’s enjoying a deluxe vacation when other people can’t. You’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t — but hey, don’t blame Hathaway. She’s just trying to have a good time.

Anne Hathaway ‘I Don’t Want to be Like Angelina Jolie’

Anne Hathaway has denied she models herself on Angelina Jolie.

The Devil Wears Prada actress – who recently revealed fake tan left her “looking like an orange zebra” – says although she admires the Tomb Raider star, she only tries to copy Jolie’s attitude to fame.

She explains, “I love Angelina, I think she is beautiful – but it is not my aim to be just like her. I admire what she does greatly. She uses her fame in a good way – and that is what I hope to do too: to make a difference.“Aside from getting a nice table at a nice restaurant and occasionally getting free clothes, fame can begin to seem very empty.

“And if you do not take certain steps to use it for something good it can really consume you and make you completely self-obsessed.”

Anne Hathaway Has More Talents Than We Know, Says Jonathan Demme

Many of this year’s celebrity “Dancing with the Stars” contestants have youth on their side, but the Go Go’s Belinda Carlisle tells us she

has her own secret weapons. “I chant every day and I do a ton of yoga.

Besides keeping you flexible, it really does change you emotionally and keep you calm,” says Carlisle, who is a dedicated Buddhist. “I’ve been practicing heavily for four years and I just know from experience it makes a big difference in everything. I think if I didn’t have that I’d be a lot more crazed.”

Carlisle, who certainly had her wilder days with the Go Go’s, says she’s also being assiduous when it comes to taking care of herself.“Everybody knows that I have to be in bed by 8:30. It takes precedence over everything else. I’m 50,” she points out. “I’m one of the oldest contestants so I have to take extra care. Plus, this is a unique experience so I might as well give it my all. I don’t want to do anything half-assed.”

With the new season of “DWTS” launching tonight (3/9), Carlisle tells us she’s just trying to enjoy the ride as long as she’s lucky enough to
be on it. “I started the first couple of weeks feeling like I was 100 years old but now I’m adapting physically. I’m finding the salsa
pretty easy. I learned it in three days. The waltz took two weeks to learn because it’s about restraint and that’s something that I don’t do
very well,” she adds with a laugh.

Luckily she has a good partner to keep her in check. “I don’t think I could have a better partner than Jonathan [Roberts]. We have great
chemistry and we have a lot of fun, which I think is the main thing.”

THE BIG SCREEN SCENE: “We don’t have a clue yet what she’s got,” says filmmaker Johnathan Demme – referring to his “Rachel Getting Married” star Anne Hathaway.

“I have to laugh because people have the perception that Anne is really good at certain kinds of things, and then every time she does
something new, she redefines herself. Did you see her sing and dance on the Oscar show?” he asks. Of course, Hathaway was a nominee this
year for Demme’s movie – which gets its DVD release Tuesday (3/10) –for playing the difficult, fresh-from-rehab sister of the title
character played by Rosemarie DeWitt. He says of Hathaway, “She’s my new daughter – don’t tell her father. If she chooses her parts well, she’s going to blow our minds again and again and will create a body of work up there with the likes of Katherine Hepburn, Denzel Washington -any of the greats. Now she’s playing the White Queen in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, and I can’t wait to see what she does with that ”

In fact, he says, it was the prospect of making the movie with Hathaway that convinced him to do it. The “Silence of the Lambs”
Oscar-winning director, whose credits also include “Philadelphia” and “the Manchurian Candidate,” has been sticking to documentaries for awhile, because that’s the way he likes it. He’s soon to debut his “Neil Young Trunk Show” concert movie at the SXSW Film Festival – and
is currently filming a documentary about the late Bob Marley for which he’s been traveling to Jamaica.

“This is a healthy place for me to be. I don’t function that well in kind of formalized situations. I’ve done all that,” Demme says. “I like doing things where you don’t have to worry about opening up in 1,000 theaters. You don’t have to return a kajillion dollars. What I’m doing is a blast without the stress.”

HERE ‘N’ THERE: Country star Big Kenny Alphin is biting off an awfully big acting challenge for himself with his “Free Like Me”
independent feature that’s set to roll next month. He’s playing an alcoholic, depressed rock star who can’t stand to let anyone touch him,
and who goes off to the Caribbean to drink himself into oblivion. Casting is underway for subsidiary characters, including the
housekeeper he encounters who starts him on a turnaround.

LeVar Burton is getting ready to do a staged reading of a piece called “The Caterer” at the White Fire Theater in L.A.’s San Fernando Valley. It’s described as the story of a man who “sells you your appropriate death.” Shivers! Cynthia Watros is also aboard.

And you have to wonder about a casting breakdown that went out for a new celebrity-pranking reality show. Forces involved were supposedly
looking for stars interested in pulling pranks on friends and fans –with a nice little fee to go on top of it. And we do mean little: $100. Maybe the notice itself is a prank.
